Personal Firewalls Basics

Which is Firewall Personal?

Personal firewalls are the desktop security devices that are typically designed to enhance operating system protection by enforcing protection per program. Some operating systems (including state of the art Windows systems) enforce protection per user. Such a definition of protection isn’t always necessary or efficient, particularly when we talk about can workstations for users. click for more info here.

Threats like antivirus, antispyware and the like

The Internet of today is a plethora of spyware, worms and other malware. Persons finding credible facts can easily cope with those risks. People download new programs sometimes just to see if they are useful. Some users can hardly differentiate between malicious programs or programs that contain spyware and harmless programs before running them. Most Internet users already realize that not every program should be executed in a mail attachment but guidelines for executing downloaded user programs are still underestimated. That is where antivirus, antispyware and the like come in. Yet will they defend people against these threats sufficiently? The key antivirus and antispyware software issue is that they depend on the signatures. They need to be periodically modified so they can identify a new malware. If there is no signature in their database for the latest malware they can not counter it. Sure, certain heuristics are generally implemented in antivirus software engines but those approaches can only identify minor modifications to well-known malware programs. Security vendors’ response time varies, and this typically depends on the magnitude of the latest threat and its wildness. It takes between a few hours and several months to get a signature out. Simply saying that installing antivirus and antispyware software won’t protect you from the latest threats, but it will improve your system ‘s protection.

Aim for personal firewall

The main objective of personal firewall is generally to tighten the protection of the device, to set restrictions to limit potential malicious behavior but not to limit the user. Picture a raising workstation inside the house. Many applications are available, such as text editor, Internet browser, file manager, computer games, media player etc. By default, both of these applications will do it without personal firewall installed as the user who runs them. But why the Text Editor should be

Lets go to the Internet? How is it that the Internet browser should be enabled to change machine files? Isn’t games being able to delete documents or control system resources a potential hazard? How would kernel drivers be enabled to install media player? No, they don’t have to authorize these acts.

The aim of a personal firewall is to create rules that restrict applications in order to carry out actions that they should not be able to do and to allow actions required of them. It is something which is not achieved by antivirus or antispyware. Nowadays, however, it is the trend that antivirus products do contain the antispyware features and personal firewall features. Typically, such a tool is called a protection suite, rather than antivirus.
